Downtown Dubai is a prime destination with iconic landmarks, extravagant venues, pleasant walkable areas, luxurious experiences and cultural vibrancy.

La Mer is a world-class waterfront destination that caters to day-to-night seaside lifestyle experiences brought by festive and relaxing activities by the sea such as beach clubs, restaurants, high-end markets and seasonal popups. The development features venues along the shoreline with a contemporary mediterranean architecture and a coastal character.

Our scope focused on tying the whole masterplan together via an efficient vehicular circulation scheme and hence a unified landscape language. The concept consists of reinterpreting a natural rhizome, a tree root starting from the entrance of the site and spreading all over it gradually disappearing into the sea. This was done by laying out a 4x4 grid on the site and readapting the rhizome logic onto it, resulting in a network of pixels that go from larger ones to smaller ones.

The concept starts by extending the parking grid onto the whole landscape area. This grid not only allows the design to be structured and organized, but also to be flexible, transformative and malleable to cater any installation. It allows the design to be modern, minimalistic, with elegant clean straight lines, cancelling out any possibility for organic shapes and curves. The manipulation of the linear approach creates an ever ending, playful and dynamic design.

Our design proposal suggests a scheme that reduces the roads and relocates them along with 210 car parking to the edge of the site, leaving generous space for a proper landscape intervention and pedestrian-friendly walking distances towards the F&B’s. In this proposal, parking and roads take up 25% permitting 75% for the landscape. This landscape intervention gives space to celebrate the architectural facades with an aesthetic, glamorous and charming landscape.

Sustainable techniques and reflective or discreet materials are used in terms of lighting, the heat island effect, shading structures also stemming from the 4x4 grid. These boost the four pillars of smart development Dubai thrives on. La Mer’s landscape design focuses on Smart, Mobility, Environment, Economy and Community, making it a high-end destination.

In the end, there’s no place like the sea!
